Tell us about how and when Recognition Express was started and the motivation behind establishing the company.
Recognition Express started in 1979 making and delivering personalised name badges to a range of business from public sector (police, fire, councils etc) to supermarkets, hotels, airlines and the like.

After a successful expansion of the franchise to 18 by 2001 and the development of associated products (plaques, door plates, internal signage etc) the company needed to make some changes and began to put a ‘toe in the water’ of Promotional Products.

I joined the company at the end of 2002 and we began a period of ‘controlled re-re-engineering’ with the focus on expanding the number of income streams and increasing the number of franchisees

What have been Recognition Express’ biggest achievements/successes to date so far?
The whole r-e-engineering process was a major task and absolutely critical in ensuring a growing and robust business

What challenges have you had to overcome?
There are always challenges when you are seeking to change the status quo but ultimately change is about getting everybody to appreciate what is best for the business and what is best for them.

What marketing/promotional tools do you use to grow your franchise?
We use a matrix approach of marketing activity including but not limited to:

  • Exhibitions

  • Various magazines
  • PR
  • Direct mail
  • e-blasts

What differentiates Recognition Express from the competition?
We are totally customer focused – ours is not a business of supply or manufacture – our business is about solving problems, providing solutions and building long term solid relationships with customers. And we are better at doing these things than our competitors.

In your opinion, what makes a successful Recognition Express franchisee?
We look for certain key attributes:

  • They must be ‘people’ people
  • Diligent and hard working
  • Well-organised
  • Ambitions
  • Prepared to follow a system
  • Want to build relationships

What changes have you seen in your industry over recent year? And how have you adapted to them?
During recession many people will resort to selling on price but we have stuck to our guns and sold as always on what value we can add to the customer – we took the view and maintain it that if you resort to selling on price then you become a commodity player and you have no competitive advantage.

What does the future hold for Recognition Express?
We are very positive we have a very good business system which we are constantly developing, augmenting, adding to.

We have a very solid and receptive network of Franchise Owners.

We are supported by suppliers who understand both the products and our market and who treat our Franchise Owners as the Managing Directors that they are.

What expansion plans have you got nationally and internationally?
We do not intend to expand internationally – there is still a lot left in the UK market and we will grow as quickly as we can invite the right people to join us.

What advice would you give to someone considering franchising their business?

  • Take professional advice
  • Get someone to do a ‘one day’ evaluation of your business and give you an unbiased assessment of whether your business can in fact be franchised and roughly what the launch cost would be.
  • Do that rather than sign up day one with a ‘consultant’
  • Be prepared to invest significant money
  • Be prepared for growth of the network to be modest at first

If you had to do it all again, what would you do differently?
Probably nothing actually – what we did wrong we learnt from and what we’ve done right we’ve replicated.
