Family ties at Belvoir franchise Edinburgh

“We were looking for something that would give us the flexibility to create a family business”

Grant Lidster and his partner, Carol Gordon launched Belvoir Edinburgh South in August 2005 and since then their son has started working with them, making their business into a real family affair.

“Prior to launching our business we looked at several different franchise opportunities but were drawn to Belvoir by the brand name and support they offered,” says Grant. “We were also looking for something that would give us the flexibility to create a family business. We have four grown up children and one of my sons now works with us, dealing with tenant enquiries, looking after property maintenance issues, arranging viewings and attending to admin work. It’s been great having him working with us.”

Grant and Carol previously worked in the pensions industry, but redundancy and a golden handshake provided them with the opportunity to invest in a new career opportunity. A lack of previous experience was no problem as a comprehensive three-week training course was provided, which the couple found very helpful.

“Training took place at Belvoir’s Central Office in Grantham, and incorporated a mix of classroom-based teaching, role-play and live appraisals,” recalls Grant. “The training was complemented by onsite mentor support during and after the opening of our business, which has been extremely useful.”

Belvoir Edinburgh South has rapidly established a reputation for excellent customer service. “We have a steady stream of clients thanks to the high profile presence created by Belvoir through editorials, advertising in newspapers and leaflet drops,” says Grant. “We intend to be one of the key players in Edinburgh and our shop is in a very popular area. It is bright and fully equipped with Belvoir’s corporate branding, which really impresses our customers.

“The business is doing well, so we may have to expand and bring in more family members in the future. I would recommend to anyone who is interested in developing a family business to find out more about Belvoir. It was slightly daunting to start working for ourselves at first, but this was far outweighed by the varied and interesting career we now have. There are always challenges to face but the support we receive from Belvoir is fantastic and we have had no regrets.”

Dorian Gonsalves, Sales Director for Belvoir says: “Belvoir Franchise Owners come from all walks of life and we would certainly encourage anyone with a family that is considering a career in property management to contact us. As Grant and Carol discovered, being a Belvoir Franchise Owner can provide the flexibility and lifestyle changes that allows people to enjoy family life and successfully run their own business.

“Scotland is a large geographical area with dense centres of population. It has a vibrant, busy lettings industry but a shortage of good quality property management agencies.

“We already have strong offices in Aberdeen, Dundee, Moray, Edinburgh South, Falkirk, Inverness, Stirling, North Ayrshire and Glasgow North. We are encouraging anyone interested in acquiring a Belvoir franchise in Scotland to contact us for more details.”
