Young Greg Muir is only 12 but he already has a clear vision of the plumb job he wants working in his dad's new Drain Doctor Plumbing business.

Greg is so enthusiastic about his prospects that he has already completed a multiple-choice written test set by the Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers' Federation (SNIPEF) and come within two points of passing.

His parents, Trevor, 41, and Alison Muir are equally enthusiastic about building their new Drain Doctor Plumbing business into a multi-van operation to give Greg a solid foundation for the future. They have sold The Corner Shop newsagent's business that Alison ran in Broughty Ferry to finance the purchase of the Dundee franchise of the national Drain Doctor Plumbing group.

Greg's aspirations for a plumbing career even take precedence over his second-favourite ambition to be a professional footballer. He plays for Fairmuir Boys Under-13s, where Trevor, a former Tayside Fire Brigade player, is a volunteer coach. Trevors younger son, Ross, eight, plays for Ferry Athletic under-9s.

Having just bought the Dundee franchise, Trevor is already planning for expansion by recruiting Steve Watson, a former delivery boy from the shop, as an apprentice to work alongside himself and his two technicians.

The company's technicians are trained to undertake a full range of plumbing and drainage tasks, including closed circuit camera surveys, high-pressure jetting and 'no-dig' relining repairs.

Drain Doctor Plumbing was founded in 1993 and now has over 100 franchise areas covering the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It is a member of the UK Trades Confederation, which audits customer service, and it is registered under the national Quality Mark Approved scheme, which aims to protect householders from unscrupulous tradesmen.

Trevor and Alison have bought the Drain Doctor Plumbing Dundee franchise from Sandy Thomson, who has owned the franchise for almost 10 years during which time he has won six business growth awards. Sandy is now joining the company's head office team of four technical managers.
