Repairing Plumbings' Battered Image

Paisley man who once recovered a live hand grenade from a blocked drain has no fears when it comes to launching a new plumbing and drainage business serving North Glasgow.

John White and colleague Donald Jamieson are investing in a Drain Doctor Plumbing franchise covering an area extending to Milngavie, Cumbernauld, Clydebank, Helensburgh, Bearsden and Dunoon.

“Launching a new business always involves risks but Drain Doctor Plumbing has totally revolutionised the concept of plumbing and drainage repairs since it was launched ten years ago,” said John. “It has a proven business strategy that focuses on delivering unrivalled customer service in an industry that is plagued by horror stories about ‘plumbers from hell’.”

With decades of ‘hands-on’ and management experience in the industry, John and Donald believe their customer-focused strategy will see the business double from two vans to four in the first year.

“People are accustomed to plumbers who arrive late and promise one hourly rate but then charge double for unsatisfactory work,” said John, 38. “We’ve always believed in providing high quality, reliable service and we want to rebuild public confidence in the plumbing and drain repair trade by offering a new deal.

“We don’t impose call-out fees or charge overtime for unsocial hours; we quote a fixed price for each job before starting work so that customers know exactly how much they will pay; and all our work is guaranteed.

“We are investing in a full range of equipment so that we can carry out closed circuit television surveys and the latest ‘no dig’ drain relining and patch repairs. We even use work mats and wear plastic boot covers to protect floor coverings when we work inside.”

John, who is married with two daughters, spent 12 years in the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment before joining a Glasgow-based drainage and civil engineering company where Donald already worked. The hand grenade incident occurred in Stepps several years ago and resulted in a nearby rail line being closed while bomb disposal specialists carried out a controlled explosion.

Donald, 48, who is married with one son and lives in Thornliebank, added: “We’ve been work colleagues and friends for 11 years and together we have nearly 40 years’ experience in the business so we make a good partnership.” Drain Doctor Plumbing is the first national organisation in its sector to register under the government’s Quality Mark Approved scheme, which aims to protect householders from unscrupulous tradesmen. The company now has more than 100 franchise areas covering the UK and Ireland and was a finalist in the 2003 British Franchise of the Year competition.
