Business Doctors Franchise News Feed Business Doctors set to launch second operation in Scotland - 10-December-2021 Laurence Heron is the latest professional to join the Business Doctor’s Network and will be supporting SMEs in the Edinburgh region. Laurence has a wealth of experience from an impressive 25-year career in business. His work has taken him all over the globe, having run businesses in the UK, Australia, the USA, and China. “I strongly felt I wanted to do something positive within Scotland, which is my original home country. Helping smaller businesses and the wider business community with my experiences and knowledge is an incredibly rewarding prospect. I enjoy helping people.” As for why he specifically chose to invest in a Business Doctors franchise, Laurence explains. “What stood out to me about Business Doctors is that they were very genuine. And by genuine, I mean, frankly, no-nonsense. What you see is what you get. They don't try and pad things out with fancy words, fancy rhetoric. They are just there to help businesses grow and achieve. I've done very well in the corporate sector. But, investing in the franchise allows me to downsize and run my own business, be in control of my destiny in a sense. I can now do that in a way which I find personally rewarding and enjoyable.” Laurence believes that there is a tremendous amount of untapped opportunity for SMEs in Edinburgh, and he is looking forward to finding it. Matthew Levington Co-Founder said “Laurence is a great addition to our team, he the experience we look for in a Business Doctor and is completely on board with our ‘pay it forward’ ethos and values.” Business Doctors has 37 operations throughout the United Kingdom and recently added Bulgaria to their international portfolio. Business Doctors set to open in Bulgaria - 14-May-2021 Business Doctors is celebrating the sale of its first Eastern European master franchise. The company has sold the rights to develop the Business Doctors' brand in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is the tenth overseas territory for the UK franchisor, which offers SME consultancy and business growth support. The Bulgarian master franchise has been sold to Veselin Genev, who has a background in agricultural machinery and imports. Within three years, Genev plans to sell four-to-five Business Doctors franchises across the country of 7 million people. He will launch Business Doctors Bulgaria from a head office in Stara Zagora, an industrial, cultural and agricultural hub in the centre of the country. Genev, who holds an MSc in international economics, launched major Bulgarian agricultural machinery importer Opticom Ltd in 1991, soon after the fall of communism. Having grown the business into a 20m euro revenue company, he is now looking to take a step back from the company he founded and lead the growth of the Business Doctors brand in his country. Rod Davies, co-founder Business Doctors, said: "Over the last 30 years, Veselin has built and grown a substantial and well respected agricultural sector business in Bulgaria. "His decades of experience, impressive language skills and truly international outlook make him a very strong partner as we take our first steps into Eastern Europe. "Bulgaria is uniquely placed in Europe, bordering five other countries, including Greece, Turkey and Serbia. As brand awareness grows in Bulgaria, it will become our gateway into Eastern and Southern Europe." Veselin said: "When I discovered Business Doctors, I found a company with similar beliefs and sense of purpose to my own. "I believe Bulgaria is an excellent market for their unique brand of small business support. Figures from 2018 show that the country has over 343,000 SMEs, making up 99.8 percent of all companies. "Whilst the current landscape is tough for small businesses, many are in a place where they are eager to embrace change along the path to growth. "There is no one else offering structured, hands-on support to these companies and we will be in a very strong position. "I am very much looking forward to launching Business Doctors' first East European franchise and bringing affordable SME support to Bulgaria." Since humble beginnings in a small office above a Cheshire takeaway in 2004, Business Doctors franchisors Rod Davies and Matt Levington were set on building a global brand: the go to company for SME consultancy services. With almost 40 Business Doctors territories now operating around the UK, the company took its first steps beyond British soil in 2014 when they launched in South Africa. Since then, Business Doctors has also grown a presence in India, the Republic of Ireland, Namibia, Botswana, Dubai, Belgium, Cyprus and Malta. Business Doctors establishes new business partnership - 11-March-2021 When two businesses have the potential to go hand in hand, it makes perfect sense for them to establish a partnership that has practical value and benefits all involved. That’s why business coaching specialists Business Doctors have teamed up with business sales experts Business Partnership in a collaboration to support SME business owners towards an exceptional exit. Business Doctors specialize in delivering strategic advice and guidance to SME’s who are in need of support from experienced consultants. Passionate about giving something back, Business Doctors provide SME’s with vital services to aid their development. Some of the services they provide include strategic planning, fund raising and building business value – a service that stood out to Business Partnership, the business brokers. When it comes to building business value, Business Partnership understands its importance, after all, they deal with buyers every day and understand what they look at when evaluating a purchase. BP’s primary focus is business sales, undertaking three roles for their clients who are looking to sell: valuations, acquisitions and business sales. Paul Dodgshon, a Business Partnership franchisee went on to say “Our issue is that as franchisees, our focus is on business sales. A lot of the business owners we speak to are not quite ready for sale and need some coaching support to build their business value. Therefore, when we discovered that Business Doctors use the same Value Builder System within their coaching toolkit, it made sense to collaborate” Matt Levington, Co-Founder of Business Doctors says: “We had exactly the opposite situation. Our franchisees work with some remarkable business owners throughout the UK to grow robust and profitable businesses, yet when a business owner wants to move on to something different or retire, we couldn’t’ help.” The service providing a platform for both companies to work together is Value Builder, a tool designed to assess how valuable a business currently is. SME’s are provided with a benchmark score that enables them to evaluate their business and whether it’s ready to sell. On the Value Builder collaboration, Business Partnership Chairman, Alistair Glaze, says that Business Partnership have been using the system “as part of their valuation and sales process for nearly a decade. It’s a fantastic system which our franchisees incorporate into their toolkit of knowledge when valuing and selling businesses.” Through the new collaboration with Business Doctors, Business Partnership clients’ looking to sell can be referred to an experienced consultant with the knowledge to increase SME value. Business Doctors and Business Partnership have over 50 franchisees located from Inverness to Southampton and all places in between. This collaboration allows business owners to seamlessly step between brands that use a common language as their business matures. “Knowing that a business will come to me through Business Doctors, having been professionally coached to a shared framework means it will have sound foundations, robust systems in place and be profitable. I know from the outset that such a business is more attractive to buyers and will achieve a higher sales multiple because of that work.” Says Business Partnership’s Paul Dodgshon. "Undoubtedly, the ultimate winner from this collaboration will be the business owners who benefit from this new joined-up service.” Learn more about franchise opportunties with Business Doctors here. Gary Brown - New Business Doctors Franchisee - 16-February-2021 Gary Brown qualified as a chartered account in his native South Africa in the early 90s, moving with his family to the UK in 2005. In his last employed role, Gary spent 15 years as chief financial officer for a holding company in the automotive sector. He has previously worked as group financial controller for asset management company Bateman BV as well as a stint at Deloittes. Gary will now spend his time with SME owners, helping them to work 'on' their businesses rather than 'in' them. An extensive programme of training from the Business Doctors head office team means that he has a full raft of expertise to complement his existing knowledge of strategic planning, leadership, restructuring, financial controls and governance. According to Gary, the pandemic brought forward his decision to become self-employed, though it had always been on the cards. He said: "I had set myself a timetable to be out of the corporate world by my early 60s. The pandemic accelerated this by a few years as I was keen to continue working from home and to be more in control of my working life. After 30 years in corporate financial roles, Gary thinks he has much to offer small business owners who are looking for growth. "I find it very refreshing that small businesses are less tied up in red tape and that real changes can be made in a relatively short space of time that can help SMEs to really thrive," he said. "The Business Doctors training helped me to realise how much I already knew and to fill in a few gaps. I better understand how to market myself and have overcome my reluctance to engage with social media. I appreciate that by buying a franchise, my business is up and running much faster than if I started from scratch." Matt Levington, co-founder Business Doctors, said: "Gary is a highly experienced board level director, with a very personable manner. He has so much to offer small businesses and we are delighted that he has joined our network." Gary is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and Institute of Directors. He is an avid rugby fan and enjoys watching Saracens. Settled in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, he also enjoys reading novels, gardening, DIY, and the occasional round of golf. Welcoming Steve Smith to Business Doctors - 27-November-2020 We’re delighted to introduce the newest member to our team, Steve Smith. Steve is our new Business Doctor for St Helens, Wigan, Widnes and Leigh - an area he knows extremely well having been born and raised in St Helens. Steve will be a valuable asset as he joins us with over 30 years’ worth of experience, working in Senior Management and Director roles for blue chip companies such as Kellogg’s and AG Barr. A little bit about Steve After graduating from the University of Sheffield with a Business Studies degree, Steve began his career at the consumer goods company Procter and Gamble. He worked in various Sales, Marketing and Commercial roles for a vast selection of leading brands. Steve’s’ experience is mostly built in Business Planning and Strategy, Team Leadership, P & L Management, Consumer Brand Development and Trade Marketing. Why Business Doctors? It was while working to achieve sales, revenue and profit growth that Steve became interested in more people-centred roles, such as training, coaching and motivating others. This, alongside wanting to take up a new challenge is why Steve has decided to join us. Becoming a Business Doctor has meant that Steve can share his vast levels of knowledge and experience with SME’s in his local area, helping them overcome the challenges and issues they face. 2020 has thrown many unprecedented hurdles at small businesses, so the addition of Steve to our team brings reassurance to those who could use some extra support during this difficult period. A Community Hero nomination for one of our Business Doctors - 17-November-2020 It’s time to congratulate our very own Mike Allen, who’s devotion to helping small businesses during the last few months of uncertainty has been recognised with a BFA Community Hero nomination! The BFA Community Hero Awards have been set up to recognise, reward, and promote outstanding professionalism within this increasingly important market sector. Mike Allen joined our team back in August 2019 as Business Doctor for his local area Solihull. It was his commitment and passion for supporting SMEs that brought him out of retirement. Talk about dedication! The Business Doctor ethos aligned perfectly with his own, as he wanted to give something back by helping small businesses to achieve their vision. So, how did Mike come to master his trade? Mike graduated from the university of Leeds with a Chemical Engineering degree. Luckily for us, a career in engineering wasn’t on the cards for Mike, but the course did open the door to many experiences that would eventually lead him into a successful 30-year business career. From working at Cadbury in Bournville (with access to lots of free chocolate), to becoming part of the senior team at Camelot that set up The National Lottery. After this, Mike spent 10 years working in the education technology sector- a role focused on improving the possibilities for young people across the UK, and one that he found extremely rewarding. However, Mike discovered his true passion for helping small businesses whilst running the Croner Group, who provide HR and legal support to SME’s. More recently, he set up Arco Professional Safety Service. Another great example of Mike doing what he does best – using his vast business and leadership experience to help people see their vision and achieve extraordinary things. Why has Mike been nominated for a BFA? A drive for supporting small businesses is at the heart of why Mike does what he does. So, when 2020 threw a series of unprecedented hurdles at the nations SME’s, Mike knew he had to act quickly and do something to help his existing clients and businesses he hadn’t worked with before. Mike took it upon himself to help as many local businesses as possible, offering his support to those who needed it, on a not-for-profit basis, as so many businesses were suffering financially. Mike’s desire to help wherever he could also lead to him signing up as a Mentor/Advisor to a number of organisations including: The Birmingham Enterprise Community, Enterprise Nation, and HSBC’s Birmingham Expresso Club. Since then, Mike has engaged with over 200 businesses, some face to face, others via webinars. Mike feels he is fulfilling his sense of purpose and has built many strong, new relationships with businesses across the region. Naturally he has gained new clients as a result but that was not the main reason for doing what he did. Mike has selflessly provided businesses with experience-based support and advice in order to keep them prospering through the pandemic. We’re so proud to have him as part of our team and wish him the best of luck with the award. "I love to help people get to grips with their dreams, whether that involves taking their busi-ness to the next level and growing their wealth or stepping back from their work and having more time on their hands. "I'm interested in people as much as I am in business and my focus is always on what is best for an individual. There are no one size fits all fixes for under achieving businesses and for every SME owner there will be a unique best way forward." Ian is a vocal advocate for the Business Doctors' hands on ethos of providing practical help. "We're just not the 'hand over a report and say our goodbyes' kind of people," he said. "Business owners can feel very isolated- I know, I've been there. "As a Business Doctors I will help SME owners to recognise their ultimate goal - whether that is increasing profit, growing their markets or finding a way to help their business operate effectively when they are not there, giving them the time and space to achieve other things." David believes that all businesses, whatever their size or sector, experience similar issues and barriers to growth. "People who set up a company usually do so because they are great at doing something or because they have a passion for it, such as hairdressing, photography or health products. Very few people start a business because they are good at business," he says. Business Doctors work in a highly practical way with SMEs, getting under the skin of their businesses and working alongside business owners to achieve growth. This hands on approach, which lies somewhere between coaching and consultancy, really resonates with David. He says: "We are not the 'hand over a report and make our exit' type of consultants. "I have run my own one man band business with little or no spare resources and I have also been a partner in a £160 million turnover company. It is this broad range of experience that I believe helps me to have empathy with SME owners. This is because I have been there and I understand the challenges they face and how to overcome them. "Business Doctors allows me to use the skills and experience I have gained over the years to support small and medium sized business owners to get their businesses working for them. Throughout three decades in industry, Aslam has worked up to FD level for the subsidiaries of many multinationals, including Colgate-Palmolive, Orangina Schweppes, Sun Micro Systems and Nielsen Company. Rod Davies, co-founder Business Doctors, said: "When we met Aslam, we knew right away that we had found our perfect master franchisor for the Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union. "His business background has equipped him with a special blend of bluechip expertise alongside an appreciation of the reality of working in an SME. "We know he has an enormous amount to offer Brussels' start up and SME community and are confident that he will help us to grow our network of small and medium sized business consultants throughout Europe."
