Home Care Provider Says Services are Enhanced After her Recovery from a Brain Tumour

Walfinch home care in Eastbourne is back, enhanced by Managing Director Poojita Patel's first-hand experience of receiving care.
Within a few months of starting Walfinch Eastbourne in March 2024, a business where carers look after clients within the comfort of their own homes, Poojita was told she needed surgery for a brain tumour. “It changed my life, and deepened my understanding of care,” she says.
“After surgery my speech was slow, my movements unsteady, and I had to relearn how to walk and talk. I had severe memory loss and depression. I felt disconnected from reality, and often found myself crying for no reason. It was frightening, especially for my family,” says Poojita.
She was prescribed a long period of bed rest, and initially her family, particularly her daughter, provided her care.
Poojita says: “There’s a certain vulnerability that comes with needing help for personal things like washing, dressing, or simply moving between rooms. I could see the sadness in my daughter's eyes every time she helped me, and it broke my heart. It was emotionally painful for us both.
“I realised that receiving care from a loved one, though filled with love, is often far more difficult than being cared for by a professional.
Bringing in professional carers from a care company she had previously worked in, gave her a kind of peace. “They were gentle, skilled, and compassionate, yet detached enough to make the process feel natural, dignified, and free from emotional burden. I could just be a patient, not a mother or a wife trying to hide her pain,” says Poojita.
Seeing care through new eyes
“As the owner of Walfinch home care Eastbourne, I valued quality care, but my own experience deepened my understanding of care in ways that no training or management experience could have,” says Poojita.
“I now see the importance of bringing in professional carers at an early stage and I learned that they’re not only service providers; they’re lifelines, not just helping people function, but lifting their spirits.”
How it's changed my care service
Poojita is now back to building up Walfinch Eastbourne, but with even more purpose and passion.
She is currently expanding her care team. “I will be asking why candidates are drawn to a care career, and looking for signs of empathy and care's spiritual aspects. I'll also be using my experience to help train everyone in my team.”
Benefits of being a franchisee
Poojita says: “As soon as I had a date for surgery I told Walfinch Chief Executive Amrit Dhaliwal and the senior franchisee support team. I was amazed to discover how much practical and emotional support they gave.
“They call to ask how I am and send flowers and greetings. Without that I would not be as well as I am now.
“I made the right decision when I chose the Walfinch home care franchise, and I'm now looking forward to growing the business – mine and theirs.”
