How to switch careers, work in travel and get your business for free!

Becky Westaway worked in PR for 16 years but after the pandemic she wanted to be her own boss, spend more time with her two children and choose her own hours.

Having worked for big agencies and brands, she knew that the fastest way to have a successful business was to invest in a franchise.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to have my own business but, as I didn’t want to start from scratch, I started looking at franchise options.”

Becky came across The Travel Franchise which trains people how to become a home-based travel consultant and she says it changed her life. Like 98 per cent of its franchisees, Becky had never worked in the industry before, but she recognised that she had crossover skills and resources.

“I realised that the things that I enjoy about my old job are really transferable: I love problem solving, meeting new people, networking and socialising. Plus I knew I had a good number of contacts so I could see how I could make business work.”

Becky trained with The Travel Franchise in December 2021 and took her first booking just days after training. Within a month she’d arranged five or six holidays and within four she’d taken several £20-£30k bookings and one that was over £80k!

She was determined to achieve the company’s Money-Back Challenge where franchisees can get their Elite franchise fee (£14,995) refunded if they make a set amount of commission in 12 months.

“The Money-Back Challenge was always a big focus. There was no doubt in my mind that I'd get it - it was just a question of how quickly it could be achieved!”

Becky achieved it in just seven months and is now aiming at reaching a million pounds in bookings by December 2023 - a figure that will give her impressive take-home salary based on commission. But it’s not all about the money.

Becky loves the feel-good vibe when she books someone a holiday that they really enjoy. Plus she admits that becoming a travel consultant has given her the opportunity to experience some incredible trips herself both with The Travel Franchise and its travel suppliers.

So is Becky glad she made the move from PR to travel consultant?

“It’s definitely changed my life for the better. I can watch my son on the sidelines of a game and then run to the car to take a booking on my laptop and then run back to watch the rest of the match.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made - there is no ceiling to my ambition. It’s a powerful feeling that I’ve not had before and that’s really exciting.”
