Antal International gives an overview of the Hospitality Job Market

Executive Assistant Managers are finding themselves in high demand, whilst need for Food and Beverage directors now slightly outweighs supply. Salaries are approaching pre-recession levels and in some cases even exceeding them.

International executive search company, Antal International, has released results of its “Hospitality Job Market Overview & Salary Survey 2015”. The research covers hospitality employers and professionals operating in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and UAE.

Below you will find a brief summary of the results of the survey.

The talent search

The most difficult positions to fill within the hospitality sector are Executive Assistant Managers according to 63% of respondents. However only 34% of employers reported the shortage of Food & Beverage managers.

“The reason why the EAM roles become a challenge for most hospitality employers is the specific specialist requirements they set up for the candidates. Depending on the unit, some hotels would look for the Executive Assistant Manager with sales & marketing background, other hotels would need a deep knowledge in the room revenue management, which are the major factors in the success of the business” – comments Salvatore Fernandez, Managing Partner of Antal International.

Job change

For the majority of respondents (67%) a new challenge is the most crucial factor when deciding whether to accept a job offer or not. Better work/life balance (65%) and a higher degree of career development opportunities (61%) were also considered highly important when accepting or rejecting a new job.

"Hospitality professionals are quite conscious about choosing a new organisation to work for and often consider several offers, selecting the most appealing to them. The career progression and financial rewards should go hand in hand, that’s why most of the respondents didn’t mention wages as an independent key factor. More challenging and interesting scope of work is usually the primary reason for moving jobs at the senior level. This shows how important for employers should be career development programmes and internal promotion opportunities "- comments Salvatore Fernandez, Managing Partner of Antal International.

Compensation

For middle and senior managers, the most important benefits when choosing an employer are bonus schemes (81%) and pension/shares options (75%). Of similar importance are benefits such as life insurance and private health; which are considered major motivators for 73% of the respondents. Use of Fitness Club plans are traditionally the last in the ranking for senior managers and was mentioned by only 13%.

“Keeping staff happy and engaged is a key factor in ensuring the best employees remain part of your Hospitality business. When I talk to the candidates applying for senior positions, I hear that they want to be involved in the success of the business. And if they contribute in the success of the business they want to be awarded accordingly. This makes them feel that a bonus scheme becomes the most important aspect when accepting a new job offer” – comments Salvatore Fernandez, Managing Partner of Antal International

Salary

As General Manager positions command the highest average salary within the sector, the United Kingdom leads with the highest average of £160,000 (GBP) gross for this role, with the United Arab Emirates with an average of $170,000 (USD) net. Spain offers the lowest average pay of €125,000.

“Salary trends are directly affected by the regional economic activity. For example, at the moment the United Kingdom has an incredible economy boom thus the salary levels are above the rest of Europe. The same applies when comparing salaries between the big cities and small towns within one particular country” - comments Salvatore Fernandez, Managing Partner of Antal International

More detailed statistics on each aspect of employment and engagement, information on specific industries and also salary data can be found in the report. Please apply here to be the first to get the full survey results.
