The Zipyard franchise in Marple helped the Birdman fly

Owner of The ZipYard in Marple and clothes designer Jane Nketiah is used to getting requests for one-off items, so when leading outdoor clothing specialists Regatta asked her to create a birdman outfit for this weekend’s International Birdman competition she rose to the challenge.

Jane has worked with Regatta, the iconic outdoor clothing brand for several years. The fact that The ZipYard has its own on-site trained seamstresses combined with Jane’s own background as a clothing designer made the company the ideal choice for this very special commission.

Said Jemma Volp-Fletcher, PR and media relations manager for Regatta: “Our new campaign is all about embracing everyday adventure and as part of this we’re visiting some of the UK’s best known events with our #itsmyadventure photo booth. The Worthing Birdman is a vibrant, fun event for all the family and we’re really excited to be involved, both as a sponsor and a competitor!”

The International Birdman event is taking place in Worthing from 12-13 July. It is a non-powered flying competition for birdmen and women attempting to defy gravity and “fly” from a platform constructed to the Southern end of Worthing Pier. Held in Worthing since 2008 the two day spectacle attracts thousands of visitors and is televised across the world.

Many of the flyers take part to raise money for charities, other design complex machines to aim for the distance prizes. A substantial prize of £10,000 is offered for the furthest flight should a birdman achieve over a 100 metre distance.

Commenting on the commission Jane said: “We had a lot of fun making this outfit. From a design point of view it really challenged me and it called upon all of the sewing skills of my team, but we’re thrilled with the end result and will be looking out for it in televised coverage of the event from Worthing.”

The ZipYard is located on Stockport Road in Marple and offers a wide range of alteration and tailoring services, all done on site by trained professionals in a clean, purpose-built environment. The centre has individual private changing rooms and a dedicated bridal suite where the ZipYard’s trained seamstresses can pin up alterations in situ.

From dress re-styling and taking in or letting out garments to bridal-wear fitting or formal wear alterations, The ZipYard can do it all. There is a 1-hour express service for zips, hems and minor repairs so shoppers can buy a garment in the morning and have the alterations done in time to wear the outfit that evening. Opening hours are: Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 9:30am to 4pm.
