The Taherian Brothers' Mission to Make a Difference
‘What good is a person who doesn’t better the world around them?’ That’s what Dan and Paul Taherian’s dad used to say.
And it’s their caring nature that led them to set up their home care business, Sylvian Care Woking, in 2022. The brothers wanted to make a difference.
Paul was working in accountancy, and Dan was feeling unfulfilled in his role as an insurance consultant. ‘Why am I putting all this effort in?’ Dan thought and instead he decided it was time to start his own business.
‘When my brother and I started looking into a new business venture we felt that care was perfect,’ he says.
‘I love helping people in need. It was important to me that I had a role with purpose,’
The brothers were brought up to be caring. They wanted to be able to help people stay in their own homes, to provide excellent quality of care and to make sure their clients were safe and happy.
At the start they were delivering care themselves. ‘I’m a jolly person and I was bringing a lot of smiles to our clients,’ Dan recalls. ‘I always like to have a laugh. I feel that care is a lot to do with companionship as well. You might be the only person they see that week or that month.’
Dan and Paul learnt every aspect of the business from the care side to the office side. It was an exciting time, and they were pleased to have the support of Sylvian Care.
‘If you have never been in the industry, it’s a fantastic advantage to be part of a franchise. Having a team of people around you that you can turn to for advice when you need it is a great help.’ says Dan.
The business grew quickly and now most clients come through word of mouth or through reviews. And there have been so many special moments along the way.
Last year they sang: ‘Happy Birthday’ and brought flowers and a cake for a client who was celebrating their 105th birthday.
When it comes to choosing carer professionals, the brothers, both managing directors, are very ‘picky’ about who they hire. They want to choose candidates who are caring and really want to help. Experience isn’t always necessary.
And they like to go the extra mile both for clients and carers. ‘I always think if you do good then good things will come to you as well,’ says Dan, who wishes he had set up the business earlier. ‘It’s a good business to be in.’
The brothers regularly take a couple of clients in their eighties for a walk to the park ‘We build a relationship, get close, and it’s always nice to share something like that with friends,’ says Paul. ‘We are genuine and treat each person like an individual.’
Paul says he would encourage others to take a franchise with Sylvian care.
‘At the start I was working ridiculous hours’ he says. ‘But at the end of the day, I felt like I’d done a great job. In accountancy I’d go home and dread the next day. Now I always look forward to it.
‘It’s very rewarding to make people happy.’
