Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying your Chicken Cottage franchise?
I’ve always had a deep interest in the food industry, having owned a fast-food restaurant and a pizza shop in the past. Additionally, my early experience working at McDonald’s during my studies gave me valuable insights into the fast-food business. Apart from my food ventures, I also have a background in IT consultancy and property development, which has honed my business acumen.

Can you also tell us about Chicken Cottage
Chicken Cottage is a renowned fast-food brand with a strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction. I chose Chicken Cottage because of its impressive reputation and support system for franchisees, which made it an ideal choice for me.

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you a QSR franchise and why Chicken Cottage?
The franchise route appealed to me due to its established systems, brand recognition, and proven success model. My passion for the food industry and prior experience made fast food the perfect choice. Chicken Cottage stood out for its strong branding and commitment to quality.

How did you raise the finance?
I utilised personal savings, additional funds from rental income properties, and support from my IT consultancy business. This diversified approach helped me secure the necessary investment with confidence.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
Chicken Cottage provided comprehensive training, covering from operations to customer service. The ongoing support has been incredible, with access to marketing resources, supply chain assistance, and operational guidance.

How would you describe your day-to-day role as a Chicken Cottage franchisee
As a franchisee, my day revolves around overseeing operations, ensuring quality standards, managing the team, and building relationships with the community. It’s a dynamic and fulfilling role that requires both strategic planning and hands-on involvement.

Provide information on challenges overcome as well as your key successes to date.
One challenge was adapting the existing shop layout to meet Chicken Cottage’s standards. However, with proper planning and a great team, we completed the transformation on time. A key success has been the overwhelming support from the local community, which has led to a strong opening performance.

Has becoming a Chicken Cottage franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Yes, becoming a franchisee has been a life-changing experience. It has allowed me to combine my entrepreneurial spirit with a structured business model.

How do you achieve a work-life balance?
I prioritise delegating tasks to my team and setting aside time for family. Leveraging technology for business management also helps me stay efficient without compromising personal time.

How do you incentivise your staff and recognise success?
I focus on creating a positive work environment, offering competitive pay, and recognizing achievements through rewards and appreciation. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions ensure everyone feels valued and motivated.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise? 
Do your research thoroughly and choose a franchise that aligns with your interests and strengths. Understand the financial requirements and be prepared to invest time and effort to make it a success.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?  
A successful franchisee is passionate, adaptable, and committed to maintaining the brand’s standards. Strong leadership and the ability to build a motivated team are also crucial.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to expand my involvement with Chicken Cottage, potentially opening additional stores in strategic locations. My goal is to grow both professionally and personally while contributing to the community.

If you had to do it all again, what would you do differently?
I would start by consulting with more experienced franchisees to gain deeper insights before launching. This could have streamlined some of the initial challenges I faced.
