Getting back what you put in with Oscars Pet Foods

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?
I went down the franchise route because I wanted to be my own boss and be in a situation where the more effort you put in will have a direct effect on your finance.
I chose Oscars because I like working with pets and could see potential in the dry food industry.
What did you do before taking up a franchise?
I met with several companies offering franchises and then decided, which franchise would be the best match for myself considering my strengths.
How did you raise the finance?
Savings and through family.
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
After purchasing the franchise both my Dad and myself received a weeks training and we get refresher day courses.
What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
At the moment I'm still trying to build up a customer base so I go canvassing and speak to dog walkers in the morning. Later in the day I ring up new leads to set up taste trials, where potential customers let their pets sample the food, and contact existing/new customers to take orders and give advice. Two days in the week I deliver orders, which I've taken from earlier phone calls.
So far I have had a trade stand at one dog show in Harrogate, which led to a number of new customers and leads. Later this month I'll be going to the Weeton show, which I'm hoping will be as successful.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Being a franchise has changed my life in that my working hours are later in the day. I like working with pets and speaking to new people face to face everyday.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Deciding which franchise to go for may be one of the most important decisions in their life. You need to be 100% sure before commiting yourself for the next 5+ years
