Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying your Gong cha franchise?

Prior to purchasing Gong cha, I had a diverse background and a strong passion for entrepreneurship. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Business & Financial Management, followed by three months of intensive study and acquired a CFA Level 1, CIPD Level 3.

I gained valuable experience in the corporate world specialising in Data Analysing for Paid Search Digital Marketing; this role allowed me to hone my skills in marketing, finance, and management. However, I desired greater independence and the opportunity to apply my expertise in a business of my own. This marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my entrepreneurial journey with Gong Cha.

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you choose bubble tea? And why Gong cha?

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, I conducted extensive market research and evaluated various industries. Recognizing the benefits of an established brand and ongoing support, I decided to invest in a franchise business. With careful consideration, I found the perfect franchise opportunity that aligned with my skills, interests, and long-term goals. We became interested in the bubble tea industry due to its high demand, growth potential, and appeal to a diverse customer base in the UK.

How did you raise the finance?

Personal savings and support from family.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

Following the purchase of our Gong Cha franchise, we underwent a rigorous one-month training program in Manchester. This intensive training provided us with the essential skills and knowledge needed to operate our franchise successfully. Additionally, the head office continues to offer ongoing support and assistance whenever necessary.

How would you describe your day-to-day role as a franchisee

As a franchisee, our day-to-day role involves managing business operations, overseeing inventory, maintaining quality standards, providing customer service, and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for customers.

Provide information on challenges overcome as well as your key successes to date.

Running a bubble tea franchise near three other competitors has been challenging, but we've found ways to succeed. By promoting limited series, one-off special offers here and there, and maintaining excellent service, we believed that’s what make our brand stand out.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Becoming a franchisee has changed our life by giving us the opportunity to be our own boss. It can be both stressful and fun, but overall, it has been a fulfilling experience. We have learned valuable skills, seen our hard work pay off through increased income, and enjoyed the satisfaction of running our own business.

How do you achieve a work-life balance?

Delegate tasks, seek support, and find efficient work methods whatever work for individual.

If you have staff, how do you retain your best staff and keep morale high and productive; how do you incentivise your staff and recognise success?

We prioritise treating them well and with respect, providing incentives here and there, praise them when they do well. A positive work environment is important.

Can you tell us about any community involvement, including any local partnerships, incentives or charity work you are involved in?

We partner with Malaysian and Vietnamese groups so far. It was a fun and meaningful experience and we look forward to more involvement with our local community in the next few months.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise?

Thoroughly research and do due diligence before buying your first franchise. People often go for cheaper franchise but they sometimes forget quality is what make customers come back.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?

In our opinion, a successful bubble tea franchisee possesses several key qualities. Firstly, a strong passion for the bubble tea industry and a genuine interest in providing a delightful experience to customers. Secondly, effective business management skills, including the ability to handle operations, inventory, and finances efficiently. Thirdly, excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with customers and create a welcoming atmosphere. Lastly, adaptability to stay updated with industry trends, innovate, and continuously improve the business.
