New Cardiff appliance expert shares his five-minute MOT for household appliances
A strange noise from the washing machine, a fridge that doesn’t feel quite as cold or a dishwasher that suddenly leaves glasses looking cloudy – small changes can sometimes be the first warning that an appliance needs a little attention.
Now, Cardiff’s newest appliance repair expert is sharing a simple five-minute MOT to help households spot those early warning signs and keep everyday appliances running smoothly.
Local engineer Rhys Pring officially launched Pacifica Local Cardiff in August, bringing his background in hands-on technical roles and customer service to homes across the city. “I’ve lived in the area all my life, so being able to help people in a community I know is a big part of why I’ve chosen this field of work and opened my own business.
“I like being able to turn up, find out what’s wrong and get things working again – especially when it’s an appliance people rely on every day,” added Rhys. “It’s great knowing you’ve been able to make someone’s day that little bit easier.”
As he gets out on the road helping local households with everything from washing machines to ovens, Rhys is encouraging homeowners to give their appliances a quick check before minor niggles have the chance to become bigger, more expensive problems.
His five-minute appliance MOT covers a handful of simple checks anyone can make at home, with no toolbox required:
1. Listen for anything unusual - you know how your appliances normally sound, so pay attention if something changes. Banging, grinding, rattling or a motor that suddenly seems louder than usual can be an early indication that something isn’t working as it should
2. Watch for changes in performance - keep an eye on how well your appliances are doing their job. A washing machine that starts moving excessively, a dishwasher leaving dirty or cloudy glasses, a tumble dryer taking longer to dry clothes or a fridge struggling to stay cold are all worth investigating
3. Take notice of unusual smells - an unexpected burning, electrical or musty smell shouldn’t be ignored. Switch the appliance off if you’re concerned and get it checked rather than continuing to use it and hoping the problem disappears
4. Check and clean the filters - keeping filters clean can make a real difference to performance. Check your manufacturer’s instructions for where the filter is located and how often it should be cleaned
5. Inspect the seals - take a quick look at seals around appliances such as fridges, freezers and ovens. Check for splits, damage or areas where the seal isn’t sitting properly, as a poor seal can allow cold or heat to escape and affect how efficiently the appliance works.
Rhys is now turning his attention to becoming the go-to repair expert in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. “Great service means a lot to me. I’d like people to know they can rely on me when something goes wrong.
