Premier and 300 Children Smash Fencing World Record!

Working with the national governing body for fencing, British Fencing, Premier and Birmingham-area school children have officially become Guinness World Record holders, for the largest fencing lesson ever held!

On September 27, 2017 at Rockwood Academy in Birmingham, Premier—best known as the owners of Premier Sport—in partnership with British Fencing, activated 300 children to break the world record for the largest fencing lesson ever!

In order to break the world record, the lesson had to last for 30 minutes and exceed 250 participants. To make sure that there could be no doubt, 300 children from CORE Education Trust schools, Rockwood Academy and Nansen Primary, joined in the fun with sabres in hand and a smile on their faces for 45 minutes on National Fitness Day, a nationwide event organised by ukactive that encourages adults and children across the UK to get moving.

CORE’s CEO, Adrian Packer is an independent non-executive director of ukactive had this to say; “Our partnership with Premier has had a transformative impact on our schools. This latest achievement is not only world record breaking, it is also testament to the ambition of this partnership and a tribute to the inspirational staff who are committed to bringing a more active culture into our schools. A recent study revealed that if we took the least fit child from a class of 30 tested in 1998, they would be one of the five fittest children in a class of the same age today. This is unacceptable and we will continue to work with premier to make sure that more children in our schools stay more active more often. Being able to call ourselves world record holders is a wonderful bonus and so I’m very proud to celebrate this with the staff and children at Rockwood and Nansen.”

Premier’s Operational Director, Danny Melling was quick to praise the power of collaboration: “I am absolutely delighted that Premier were able to collaborate with CORE Education Trust schools, Nansen and Rockwood, to make this World Record possible. I am extremely proud of the 300 children that participated on the day. Our goal at Premier is to educate and active the world by offering more opportunities for children to engage with physical activity and this World Record is a fantastic example of this.”

The record attempt saw Premier team up with British Fencing, providing skilled tutors that instructed students in the basics of fencing, a sport which works to increase coordination, precision and decision-making skills. Attending on the day was Ben Peggs, one of the country’s leading fencers. Ben was an inspiration to the children and his enthusiasm for the sport he loves was clear to see.

For Premier, becoming World Record holders helps to further the goal of Educating and Activating the World through physical activity. Premier are the largest provider of physical activity in the UK, offering courses and clubs helmed by highly-qualified professionals that take place inside and outside of school hours. These opportunities provide children the chance to engage in physical activity centred around sport, performing arts and wellbeing, ultimately fostering healthier lifestyle choices.
