Store Manager to Successful Business Owner: Colin Basil's Card Connection Journey

Transitioning from managing retail stores to owning a business can feel like a massive leap, but for London-based entrepreneur Colin Basil, making that move with Card Connection has proved to be the ideal career evolution.

After years as a senior manager overseeing a small group of family-owned convenience stores across London. Helping turn around underperforming locations and setting up new branches.  Colin wanted to take the next step in his career. However, having seen firsthand the high financial risks and potential losses involved in taking on an independent convenience store, he remained hesitant.

That changed during a routine merchandise call from Nishan Jeyakumar, an established Card Connection franchisee, visited Colin's store.

"I had never considered franchising previously," says Colin. "Nishan explained how he was his own boss and that franchising wasn’t as risky as starting your own business from scratch. He talked about the dedicated support he received from his Regional Sales Manager and Head Office, and I thought this could be a great opportunity."

Colin officially joined the Card Connection network as a franchisee in 2023.

From the start, the model offered financial reassurance. Buying an established territory meant verified income from day one of trading, alongside clear historic sales data that made financial planning straightforward.

To ensure a smooth transition, Card Connection provided a comprehensive training and onboarding program which included

Head Office Training: In-depth instruction covering the business systems, operational theory, and administration behind running a franchise.

Hands-on Handover: A four-week transition period visiting every store in the territory alongside the outgoing franchisee to audit stock, agree on fixture values, and map out the customer base.

In-the-Field Support: Direct, ongoing mentoring from a designated Regional Sales Manager Andy Bull, covering best practices for merchandising, route planning, and pitching to new outlets for business growth.

"All of this helped me grow in confidence," Colin notes. "Knowing that I have Andy to call on for help in the field, as well as the team at Head Office in Farnham, has been a weight off my mind."

Today, Colin’s day begins at 9:00 AM at his local storage unit. Supported by a picker-packer who prepares store orders and sorts returned displays, Colin loads his van with greeting cards, gift wrap, bags, and partyware before heading out on his route. Servicing an average of six stores a day, he manages stock levels, updates merchandising displays, and works with retailers to maximize sales.

While the role demands dedication, especially during peak retail seasons like Christmas—the rewards have been well worth the effort.

"Being self-employed has given me flexibility and a great work-life balance," Colin shares. "If you work hard, follow Card Connection’s proven systems, plan proactively, and keep a close eye on cash flow, it’s a very rewarding business. I am proud to own a Card Connection franchise, knowing I am backed by a company with over 30 years of success."
