Nitin Atulker has been the Plan Burrito Canterbury franchisee for over two years. Nitin, who comes from a background in hospitality, customer service and operations, has always wanted to build a scalable and long-term business in the food sector, and so Plan Burrito was an ideal choice for him.

Tell us about a Plan Burrito franchise:

Plan Burrito is a fast casual Mexican street food brand offering quick service, fresh food and a simple, high demand menu. The market is still unsaturated which gives good growth opportunities.

Why franchising and why Plan Burrito:

I wanted a proven system, strong support and a brand I could scale. Plan Burrito stood out because the franchisor is honest, transparent and supportive. I prefer fast, efficient hospitality where customers do not have to wait long.

How did you raise the finance:

Through personal investment, existing business income, a start up loan and equipment leasing.

What training and support did you receive:

Training covered operations, food preparation, safety and staff management. Ongoing support includes regular check ins, marketing help and operational guidance.

Describe your day to day role:

I oversee operations, manage staff, ensure quality, maintain stock and monitor finances. I focus on leadership and supporting my team.

Challenges and successes:

Challenges included the build out, staffing and managing early costs. Successes include strong customer demand, a loyal customer base and consistent food quality.

Has becoming a Plan Burrito franchisee changed your life:

Yes. It has given me a structured and scalable business model with strong support.

How do you manage work life balance:

A well trained team allows me to delegate and focus more on planning and strategy.

Why is it scalable:

Plan Burrito is simple to operate, has strong margins and easy to repeat systems. I am now working on securing my second location.

How do you retain staff:

By offering fair pay, rewards, involvement in decisions and clear growth opportunities.

Community involvement:

We sponsor university cricket and womens football teams, Kent Cheers and Canterbury Football Club players. We partner with local businesses like the Canterbury Punting Company and support charity and fundraising events.

Advice for new franchisees:

Choose a franchisor who is honest and supportive. Understand your numbers and be ready to work hard in the first year.

What makes a successful franchisee:

Consistency, good leadership and following the franchise system.

Future plans:

To open multiple locations across Kent and grow event trading through the Plan Burrito trailer.

What would you do differently:

Start earlier, target bigger cities first and distribute more leaflets before opening.
