Women Who Mean Business: Becky Hewitt and the Growth of Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield

From an unexpected start in administration to becoming the sole owner of a thriving Merry Maids franchise, Becky Hewitt’s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability and determination. Since joining the business in 2010, she has helped transform and grow Merry Maids of Sutton Coldfield while navigating personal and professional challenges along the way. In this Women in Franchising Spotlight, Becky shares how franchising provided the structure, support and opportunities that enabled her to build a successful business and a rewarding career.
Tell us about your journey into franchising.
I first became involved in the business in September 2010. At the time, I was working part time in the legal sector due to the recession. To supplement my income, I took on an administrative role within Merry Maids and ServiceMaster Clean, supporting Helen’s dad following the passing of his wife.
The business was already well established locally, with a loyal customer base and a small team. As I became more involved, Helen and I recognised the potential. We made the decision to purchase Merry Maids of Sutton Coldfield to protect what had been built and to grow it further. The purchase completed in August 2011.
In December 2024, I bought Helen’s share and became sole owner.
Running a cleaning business or buying a franchise was never part of my original plan. However, once I understood the franchise model and saw the opportunity for structured growth, it became a long-term commitment rather than a short-term solution.
Why did franchising appeal to you?
Franchising was not something I had set out to do, but the structure made sense very quickly. The Merry Maids brand was established, with clear systems, marketing and operational support already in place. That gave me reassurance as a first-time business owner.
Being part of ServiceMaster Ltd means there is depth of experience behind the brand. The franchisee network is also a real strength. We share advice, challenges and practical solutions. You are in business for yourself, but you are supported at every stage.
Marketing support has been central to our growth. We receive guidance on campaigns, visibility and generating enquiries. That has helped us strengthen our presence across Sutton, Lichfield, Tamworth and Walsall.
What challenges have you face along the way?
Taking over a long-standing, traditional business came with its challenges. When we acquired it, there were only two cleaners, and many systems were still very manual. We were committed to modernising the operation, strengthening recruitment and building a larger, more resilient team, while always remaining respectful of the foundations already in place.
We have also navigated significant external pressures, including Covid 19 and ongoing increases in the minimum wage. Both required careful financial management and steady leadership.
On a personal level, I lost my father last year. The support from ServiceMaster Ltd and the wider network was invaluable. The care shown went far beyond business. It reinforced the strength of being part of a franchise network.
How do you define success?
For me, success means sustainable growth and balance. We have expanded the team, increased turnover and built a strong client base across Sutton, Lichfield, Tamworth and Walsall. I am particularly proud of the team of women I employ. Their professionalism and commitment are the foundation of the business. Creating stable employment locally is something I value greatly.
I am also proud that the business runs smoothly without my constant presence. That is the result of clear systems and investing in the right people. As a parent to eight-year-old twins, having that structure gives me flexibility when I need it. The lifestyle benefit comes from building the business properly.
What advice would you give to other women considering franchising?
Many women question whether they have the right background. I moved from law into domestic services. You do not need to have every answer on day one.
If you are considering franchising, focus on your willingness to learn, your determination and your ability to lead. A strong franchise provides training, systems and ongoing support. The rest comes from commitment and consistency.
