Building a Multi-Territory Franchise Success with Merry Maids

When Nicky Morris relocated to Lancashire with her husband and young child in 2002, she was looking for a fresh start and an opportunity to build something of her own. Having spent much of her career in the corporate world, she wanted a business that offered both personal fulfilment and long-term growth potential. After researching a range of franchise opportunities, she chose Merry Maids, recognising both the strength of the brand and a growing demand for reliable, professional home cleaning services.

More than two decades later, Nicky has transformed her business into one of the most successful Merry Maids operations in the UK, serving customers across Fylde, Blackpool and Preston while earning national recognition for business excellence, leadership and community involvement.

Growing a Business from the Ground Up

Nicky launched Merry Maids Fylde and Blackpool in 2002, building the business from scratch. As demand increased, she expanded into neighbouring Preston, acquiring the territory after ten years of successful trading. Continued growth led to the opening of a dedicated Preston office in 2016, creating a multi-territory operation that now serves customers across a large part of Lancashire.

Reflecting on her journey, Nicky has spoken openly about the challenges of starting a business while raising a young family and settling into a new area. However, she believes the rewards of business ownership have made the effort worthwhile, describing the business as something built through years of commitment, hard work and personal investment.

A People-First Leadership Approach

Throughout her 24-year journey, Nicky has maintained a strong focus on supporting both customers and employees. She takes particular pride in creating a positive workplace culture, mentoring team members and helping employees develop confidence and take on greater responsibility within the business.

Her commitment to employee engagement has been reflected in national recognition for her team. The business has received awards for employee engagement, while key team members have also been recognised at a national level for their contributions.

Nicky credits much of her success to the people around her, regularly highlighting the importance of having the right team in place and investing in staff development and progression opportunities.

National Recognition and Industry Success

In 2024, Nicky's achievements were recognised when she was awarded Great British Franchisee Status in the prestigious Great British Franchisee Awards. The judges praised her strong track record, steady business growth and commitment to the Merry Maids model, describing her as an outstanding franchisee and a true brand ambassador.

The award placed Nicky among the UK's leading franchise business owners and recognised not only her commercial success but also her leadership, customer service standards, staff retention and contribution to the wider franchise community.

Making a Difference in the Community

Beyond business success, Nicky has consistently demonstrated a commitment to supporting local and national charitable causes. Her business has actively supported organisations including Alzheimer's Society, Macmillan Cancer Support and Brian House Children's Hospice.

Her dedication to community involvement has been particularly evident through Merry Maids' partnership with Alzheimer's Society. Nicky and her team were recognised as Forget Me Knot Challenge Champions for their fundraising efforts and dementia awareness initiatives, helping raise funds and promote understanding of dementia across their local communities.

Looking Ahead

After more than two decades of business ownership, Nicky remains focused on ensuring the long-term success of the business she has built. Her future plans centre on creating a lasting legacy by preparing the business for the next generation of ownership, ensuring that customers continue to receive exceptional service and employees continue to benefit from a supportive working environment.

Her journey demonstrates the opportunities available through franchising when combined with determination, strong leadership and a commitment to people. From launching a single territory in 2002 to building an award-winning multi-territory operation, Nicky Morris has become a leading example of franchise success in the UK.
