Fish and chip shops have always been a big part of Bek Halil’s life. Numerous members of his family have owned them over the years with his grandfather being one of the first migrants from Cyprus to enter the fish and chip trade.  His mother established Beks in 1989 but wanted Bek to go to university and do something different. “I had a great career in banking as well as working for food safety and health and safety firms. Whilst I was learning within my profession, I was implementing all these strategies into my mother’s fish and chip business.”  Whilst Bek originally got involved to formulate an exit strategy for his mother who was approaching retirement age, he soon realised that the business had grown to such a scale that there was an opportunity to develop it further. This has led them to franchising their proven model!

A love for travel leads to The Travel Franchise

Matt and Ashley Phillips became Not Just Travel consultants in April 2022. Both had always worked in the corporate world for big blue-chip companies, but after a near death experience in 2017, they realised that they were fed up working long hours for other people.  This led them to buy a fish and chip shop in the Lake District. After building it into a successful multi-unit business, they decided to sell and take time out to travel. It was this love for travel that led them to The Travel Franchise.

Taking on the Challenge

It’s perhaps not that common to hear homecare franchises suggested as the ideal option for young people starting out in business. “A lot of people do it as a second career, but it’s often overlooked as the first. I would highly recommend it for some people as their starting career,” says Hannah Drury. It isn’t really a surprising comment to come from Hannah, though – she became Operations Director of Caremark Epsom & Ewell, Reigate and Banstead at the remarkably young age of 25.

Faye Roddy has been the Bright & Beautiful franchisee in Altrincham since 2009.  Before buying the franchise over 10 years ago, single mum Faye worked five jobs to support her young family.  After several years of working part time at Bright & Beautiful, Faye seized the opportunity to become her own boss when she was offered the chance to invest in a pilot franchise and run the Altrincham branch.  A successful businesswoman and well known locally, Faye has married a hugely supportive partner, Chris, and expanded her family to include three children - Aaron, Morgan and Charlotte.
