Exclusive interview: Motherhood and franchising go hand-in-hand

Name: Holly Clark
Location: Ware
Franchise: Little Scrummers Rugby

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying your Little Scrummers franchise business?

I am a first time mum and have been fortunate enough to have the last 18 months off work raising our son.

What attracted you to franchising versus started starting up on your own or finding employment?

My background is working for large corporate companies and whilst I knew I would be able to find work in this field again, I wanted flexibility and not to be tied to a desk or a city location.

"Being a franchisee offers all the same opportunities as started something on your own, but you are working under the umbrella of an already established company with a reputable name. You have the security and support of the parent company to offer advice, but still have the freedom to develop the franchise into your own."

Why did you choose Little Scrummers Rugby franchise? What research did you undertake?

My husband and I are massive sports enthusiasts with a particular interest in rugby. Having had a little boy going into this field, rugby was our first choice. We undertook a lot of research in the area especially looking at the competition and whether we could offer something different.

Do you feel there is enough support or training in the industry, or externally, to help mums looking to get back into work and considering starting a business? What additional support do you think would help?

From a personal point of view I have been very fortunate with the franchise I chose and the continued support I have received.

What training and support did you receive initially from your franchisor?

We have received an enormous amount of support that we could not be more grateful for. The parent company has been on hand for any technical, administrative or marketing support.

"The support hasn't stopped either since we launched 4 weeks ago. We had 4 months’ worth of training prior to the launch of our franchise, whereby we attended other class location, getting tips and advice from the coaches."

How did you raise the finance for funding your franchise? Did you use any financial support (grants etc.) specific to business start-up?

Redundancy package.

What is a typical day for you as a  Little Scrummers Rugby franchisee?

The days do vary however my priority is always to check my emails first thing in the morning to reply to any new trial requests, queries or advertising leads. I also dedicate up to an hour a day on social media to try and originate new business.

Balancing work and family life is important for all franchisees but more so for working parents, do you think franchising gives a good work and family life balance? Has becoming a franchisee changed you and your family’s life?

"From my experience of being a full time mum/house wife, the franchise has been a great opportunity for our family as it has given me back my independence of working but still allows me to have the flexibility to be mum."

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give other mums looking to get back into work and considering starting their own business through franchising?

Make sure that you chose a field that you are passionate and care about. It can be challenging at times juggling being a mum, the house and the business so you need to have passion to keep the drive and motivation alive to succeed.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue to develop and grow the business so that Little Scrummers Ware is as established as the parent company.

Would you do it again?

Yes 100%
