Safety net of Oscars and franchising

Why I chose franchising

Mainly because of redundancy, and a dissatisfaction with the catering industry after 30 years. And the challenge of working for myself, but with a franchise safety net.

What I did before taking up a franchise

I was a qualified chef working in various hotels & restaurants, and for the final 17 years in industrial catering, primarily because of more sociable hours of work. My final position was as Catering Manager for a large industrial Catering Company.

How I raised the finance

I used my redundancy payment and some savings

The training and support I receive from my franchisor

I would say that both the training and support are probably some of the best for any franchise.

The initial training, although intense is very thorough and afterwards the field training is on a one to one basis. In addition to that there is always someone within the network who has come across any problem that may arise and is always willing to give advice.

The challenges I have faced

Doubts as to whether I could actually run a business, but with Oscars help I think I have built up a good sound business.

My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise

1) Insist on a full list of franchisees to contact and talk to them about their experiences.
2) Ensure continuous training and backup once initial training is complete.
3) Get the opinion of a good franchise solicitor
4) Last but not least, is be 100% convinced that what you are selling or providing is the best in that market.

My plans for the future

To continue to grow the business at the present rate
