Interview with John Turner of All Trades Network, Manchester

Name: John Turner
Location: Manchester
Franchise: All Trades Network

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?
For me, the reason why I went down the franchise route is easy. I chose the franchise route as the business model is proven. Also the Expected turnover and profit margins from other franchise operations help in the financial planning of the new business.

What did you do before taking up a franchise?
Before becoming a franchise, I was involved in property development

How did you raise the finance?
I was able to invest in an All Trades Network franchise by using my own funds.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
I received initial training at head office on the systems and how the franchise operates. Continued backup and support from head office is given when required. Additional training courses can be attended, which include safety and technical training.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
A typical day as a franchise varies greatly. It can include surveying property prior to undertaking works, arranging labour and materials or liaising with the loss adjusters and policy holders. The work is always different and the claims can be anything from a minor pipe burst to a complete house fire.

What challenges have you faced?
The challenges faced are generally technically difficult jobs which include dealing with policy holders that have damage to their property.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Life as a franchisee can be described in one word: Busy.

What marketing/promotional tools do you use to grow your franchise?
All Trades Network have provided me with work through head office marketing. I think by building working relationships directly with the loss adjusters, as well as providing quality work has helped to grow the business in my franchise area.

What differentiates your franchise from the competition?
I think that as we are dealing with the public we provide a high level of customer service, keeping them informed and completing the works to meet the policy holder’s expectations.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?
In my opinion a successful franchisee must enjoy dealing with people; communicating and managing workers and contractors. Additionally, an ability to manage cash flow and cost control is essential.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Look at the available franchises and find ones that you are interested in and then research them thoroughly. Meet your short-listed franchises and, ideally, speak to a number of franchisees directly and get their opinions.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to keep developing and growing the business, to assist with this I have just recently purchased an additional territory to further develop.
