CHAMPS franchisee is passionate about helping children

Franchisee name: Chantal Dawson
Franchise: CHAMPS Academy
Location: Basingstoke

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying your CHAMPS franchise business?
A: Originally from South Africa, I lived and worked in America before moving to the UK in 2003. I’m now settled in Basingstoke, Hampshire with my husband and 2 young boys. My background is in HR, working, supporting and coaching people in a corporate role.

Q: Why did you go down the franchise route?
A: I felt comfortable with the franchise route, knowing that I’ll have the support, guidance and resources available to support me on my journey and in my business.

Q: Why did you choose the CHAMPS Academy Franchise?
A: After speaking to Annette (Founder of Champs) a few times, I just knew that as a franchisee, I would receive the support and guidance needed to make my business a success. I love the ethos behind CHAMPS Academy, it’s unique and there is no one out there doing what we do.

Q: What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
A: An initial full-day training, followed by regular email communications as well as very helpful and regular Zoom video calls. The support from Annette and team is just brilliant. Annette is always there to answer my questions and to give me the right guidance when I need it. I also find the Franchisee page on Facebook very helpful.

Q: How would you describe your day-to-day role as a CHAMPS franchisee?
A: A little different to some of the other Franchisees as I have another role that I work 3 days a week. My role generally as a Franchisee would include replying to new enquiries, attending school/community fairs, contacting schools, hosting regular workshops/courses.

Q: What challenges have you overcome?
A: Having a successful business and coaching many children whilst still working in another role. I’ve had the find the right balance to fit everything in, as well as looking after my young children and everything around the house. My husband is very supportive and always helps – it really is a team work effort.

Q: Has becoming a CHAMPS Franchisee changed your life, if so how?
A: The CHAMPS tools and techniques that we teach have helped my mindset and it has helped me to think differently, more positively about every day challenges. It’s also helped me to help my son, as he is growing up and starting to come across meanies or everyday challenges which might knock his confidence. Before, I would not have a clue what to say to him but now, I use the CHAMPS coaching tools to guide him through those challenges and the difference in his resilience and confidence already is very noticeable.

Q: In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?
A: Passion for what you do, determination, hard work, resilience.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Working with more schools and establishing the CHAMPS Academy name in my local community even more.

Q: In summary of your first year as a CHAMPS Academy Franchise, what have you achieved?
A: Worked in my first school, juggled 2 roles and family life, meeting my local MP to talk about children’s mental health, being invited by Basingstoke Council to attend a meeting to talk about the importance of children’s mental health.

Q: What have you loved?
A: Seeing the difference in children, after coaching. Especially being told after coaching that ‘I can now confidently say that I believe in myself’ – giving children and young people the tools and skills to be their best self is an amazing feeling and I want to continue to do that!

Q: What have you learnt (personally and professionally)?
A: To persevere, to be present in the community and to build relationships. I knew that I have a passion for what I do but I really notice the passion and energy in me even more when I coach young people.

Q: What would you say to others interested in the CHAMPS Franchise?
A: I wish I’d started it sooner! It’s such a great opportunity to make a difference in young people’s lives and with the support, guidance and help from the CHAMPS franchise, it’s such a pleasure to be doing what I’m doing.
