Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

Before joining the World Options franchise, I was a university graduate. I didn’t want to do the typical thing of starting a 9-5 job working for someone else with little reward. My family had always run businesses, so I had the burning desire to do something successful, something to be proud of. I had some experience in sales and realised I'd like the opportunity to build my own business.

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

I’d heard about World Options through friends and family who’d bought a franchise and I could see they were doing well. It’s was a tried and tested business which others were succeeding from so I thought I could be successful too.

How did you raise the finance?

Being young and new to working life I didn’t have huge amounts of money to start something from scratch. I raised the funds through savings, help from family and I also joined forces with a friend who became my business partner.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

We had 3 days training initially, then several support days where a member of the franchise development team works with you to teach you the business. We’ve had technology training and national sales conferences when World Options make any developments updates to the online shipping portal. The training and support we receive from World Options has been first class.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Absolutely, in just 5 years we’ve turned this franchise opportunity into a really successful business. Some of the benefits of the World Options franchise is the flexibility, I have a young family so it’s great that I have the flexibility of a good working life which fits in with my family. If I need to take a day off to do family stuff I can. Another benefit is the overheads are low too, you don’t have to rent an office because you can operate the business from home.

Our profit margins are reaching new levels and we are earning sums which we could never have imagined.

Would you do it again?

It’s been a really good learning experience and I've loved the journey. It helps when you can see your hard work paying off. Yes, I definitely would, it’s been boss!

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

I worked in the warehousing industry for a company working shifts, quality checking, manual labour, data entry and checking orders. There was really not much of a future in it as I could see, but it was a job and it paid the bills.

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you choose your industry? And why did you choose your franchise?

I wanted a career that would provide for my family. I chose this industry because I saw a lot of benefiting factors, there was more earning potential and more flexibility in lifestyle. Through social circles I’d met quite a few people who had their own business through joining the World Options franchise. I saw how well they were doing, buying homes, new cars and they looked like they lived a good lifestyle and the franchise business had helped them achieve this. I thought it could offer myself and my partner as a family a better lifestyle. It’s a lifestyle I wanted for my family.

How did you raise the finance?

Through saving and help from family.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

I initially had 3 days training at the World Options support centre, learning how to find customers, using the online portal and computer systems. We were taught everything we needed to know about the shipping industry. After that over the coming months World Options have provided me additional freight training and sales training. I’ve also received development support and advice from other World Options franchisees. The training and support is ongoing, which is good. There is always someone to talk to if I have a question. Its like you have the backup of a team of people supporting you if you have any queries.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

In a typical day, I start by putting together a list of all the customers and prospective customers that I am going to call in that day. I’ll make those calls in the morning and then follow up my conversations with emails to the people I’ve spoken to. I sometimes visit customers and visit new prospective customers by going to their office premises to introduce myself and see who might be interested in using our services. Then account manage my existing customers, if I have any who need assistance with their shipping I’ll follow up their queries to help get them resolved.

What challenges have you faced?

At the beginning I found it challenging finding customers who would change their shipping provider and signup to what I was offering. I overcame this by getting advice from other franchisees and seeing how they were handling calls and how well they were doing. This helped spur me on to keep going. I realised that there are lots of different avenues you can go down when looking for customer. Realising everyone is different is the key.

I started to carefully listen to what a potential customer was saying and find out their needs. Then tailoring every conversation and phone call to adapt and offer them a service that fits in with their shipping needs. I found customers started to listen to me more, when I started to listen to their needs. Then it became so much easier. Now I have quite a large number of customers who depend on me and the services I provide, which feels like a great achievement.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Yes, my time is my own. If I need to spend time with family I can. My franchise business has given me great opportunity for the future to earn more than I’ve ever earned before and be financially stable.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise? 

The best piece of advice I would give is: Believe in the product and not to give up.

At the start I wasn’t so motivated, a few bad calls would get me down. I then let my determination take over, and that’s when everything changed for me. I brought a few customers on board, and I realised I can do this. I started to believe in the product and realised, the product does work.

What are your plans for the future?

To build my business, to carry on bringing more customers on-board using the World Options online shipping portal. My business is going from strength to strength right now, I can see the a hard work paying off. It would be great to eventually have the business run itself, some World Options franchisees have their own staff which allows this. In the future, I’d like to employ people so I can take a back seat and live a more comfortable life.

Would you do it again?

Yes, I would. I have flexibility, freedom and I’m working towards a successful future. The future is looking very bright and very exciting.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying your World Options franchise business?

Emma: I’m a keen walker and swimmer, and I love to spend time in the garden during the summer months. I also like cooking for my family and spending quality time together.

Charlotte: I study and read in my spare time, and I also enjoy going on walks with the whole family.

E: Before becoming a franchisee, I was already a successful business owner, owning a hairdressing business for over 30 years.

C: Previously I worked in the legal profession, and now I’m studying British Sign Language and Deaf Studies. 

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you choose the online courier industry? And why a World Options franchise?

E: We decided to have a franchise with World Options as we are both single mums with seven children between us, and we need and want to both be there for the family and to provide for them.

With World Options we can work as flexibly from home as we can, together supporting each other in work and with family commitments.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

C: We had 3 days training at the World Options support centre, followed by development visits and ongoing support. There is always someone to speak to if you ever have a question for the World Options franchise support team.

What is a typical day for you as a World Options franchisee?

C: Typically our day starts early with getting the children ready for school and doing the school run. We start working on the franchise at about 9.15 am - we find that it works well, and we work together well as a team, calling and finding new prospects.

E: Our day is interrupted at about 3.00pm when we do the school run again, and put our mum hats back on. When the children have been settled we get back to administrative work on the shipping portal, and sending emails to customers and prospects.

What challenges have you faced?

C: As new owners of a franchise we have been faced the challenge of getting to know the World Options CRM Systems and building confidence in knowing the work - our confidence is growing with experience. But we’ve also had great training and support which really helps.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

C: Yes it has changed our lives. We are building a future for ourselves and our families, that itself is life changing and it feels good. We juggle home life and running a business, something which has given us both a new lease of life. The potential to make this really successful is there and we are both very determined and working hard towards building the business.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise? 

C: Be realistic with your goals and your time - prioritise what’s important and what is not. It can be difficult sometimes when you work from home, but it is 100% necessary to build up your business.

Attend the training sessions put on by World Options and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

What are your plans for the future?

C: To keep at, build the business, be financially comfortable and make a success of it.

Would you do it again?

C: Yes! The franchise has given us independence and an exciting future. We have a goal to be self-sufficient and be there for our children, while looking after our parents. Working together provides us both with the emotional and physical support that busy mums need.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

Before I became a World Options franchisee, I had previously owned a franchise within the care recruitment industry for 18 years. But for me the market changed in that industry, it became very saturated with the amount of care agencies who were all fighting for the same business. With a lot more, competitors it became difficult, the profit margins disappeared, and I was working long tiring hours with little reward. So, I decided to explore other franchise business opportunities and came across World Options.

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you choose your industry? And why did you choose your franchise?

I’d already been a franchisee before and knew it was a rather simple way to setup a business. I chose World Options because it’s more streamlined and less HR intensive, you don’t really need to hire lots of people. I also felt this would make its a less stressful business to run, you don’t need to worry about managing people and paying wages, you just need to run the business yourself by finding new customers and retaining them.

How did you raise the finance?

I sold my previous franchise business in the care recruitment industry to raise the finance.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

I had 3 days training at the World Options support centre. Then after that I had 6 support days in the field from other World Options franchisees. That’s when an existing franchise or training and development manager will visit you and take you out to visit potential customers and give you additional practical training, advice, support and guidance. I’ve also been on other training such as Sales Training arranged by World Options as well. All of which prepared me for running my own franchise, with the support of head office to call and ask questions as they arise. The ongoing support has been good.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

When I had my previous franchise in the care industry, I worked long hours and was on call from 7am in the morning through to 11pm at night. Now I work less hours, more condensed in the daytime. When I think about it I don’t work as hard as I used to before. Running my World Options franchise is a lot less stressful.

My day starts by checking the World Options online shipping portal to see if any of my customers have booked shipments, then I check emails from my business customers. I then spend some time in the morning researching potential new customers and profiling them. Have lunch and start contacting them in the afternoon through calls and follow up emails and I demonstrate the online portal to any new customers I have.

What challenges have you faced?

I like to look after my customers and provide them the best possible shipping rates, sometimes depending on the type of shipment I’m not always able to offer them the cheapest price, but it’s not always about price. Customers are looking for convenience, service and great customer support, which I am able to provide.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Becoming a World Options franchisee has changed my life, my business and life is less stressful. I feel a lot more relaxed, I have more free time and a better work like balance.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise? 

My advice to anyone thinking about becoming a franchise business owner is; Make sure you do your research into the kind a franchise you are looking for and think carefully about what you want to get from it.

What are your plans for the future?

I’d like to be making a specific amount every month where I feel I’ll be living very comfortable life and I am working towards this goal. I feel the future is looking very positive and the earning potential is there.

Would you do it again?

I am very happy with my life now. I measure success by how financially comfortable I am. I’ve been a World Options franchise owner for about a year now, things have grown steadily and if I keep at it I can see the business will keep growing.

I can honestly say I would sign-up to the franchise again, it was a good decision and I have no regrets.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

I’m a businessman and I’ve been in the carrier industry for many years. I was introduced to the World Options online shipping portal by chance and I started using it for my business shipping needs, I soon realised what an amazing tool it was, I’d tried shipping through various other channels but this was the best I’d ever used, it allowed me to simplify my shipping needs, get instant quotes online and track my items all in one place, keeping my customers happy. I went down the franchising route because with franchising you are choosing a business which has been tried and tested. You have the support of an organisation behind you but you are your own boss and have the potential to earn huge sums and gain financial freedom. As I’d already worked in the carrier industry I wanted to use my existing knowledge and build on it by choosing a franchise opportunity which fitted in with my knowledge and years of experience. I chose World Options because I’d used their online shipping portal and realised it was the best in the industry.

How did you raise the finance?

I had the finance saved from my previous business investments. I thought I would get a good return on my investment with a World Options franchise. I was right to do so, last year our annual gross profit was £250k +. Which is amazing since we’ve only had a World Options franchise for 2 years. If we keep at this pace who knows what we will make next year, because we are only going to grow.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

New franchisees are invited to the World Options support centre for 3 days training, which involves showing you how to find and manage your business customers, understanding the carrier industry and teaching you the online systems. Then you are coached and mentored, the training and development team and management are just a phone call away.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

I’m happy to say the business is run by my son Nathan and son-in-law Ross, they both manage the day to day stuff, like looking for business customers who require our service by calling them, making appointments, visiting businesses and email communication. While I can now take more of a backseat, I check in with them and help them resolve any issues which may arise.

What challenges have you faced?

In the shipping industry, sometimes your customers deliveries may not get to where they were supposed to in transit or may get damaged or lost by the carriers. Which is unfortunate. When that happens World Options help deal with this, they have a great customer service and accounts department at their support centre who contact customers on your behalf to help resolve such issues.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

It has greatly changed my life, but also the lives of my son and son in law. Which is what I wanted in the first place. My dream was to have a family business that would provide a residual income that we could build on with a real opportunity for growth. I believe we have done that, the business brings us excellent income and keeps growing year on year. I am absolutely delighted that I decided to become a World Options franchisee.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise?

Do your research to find the right franchise which suits you. Try to chose a streamlined franchise with low overheads. Make sure it’s a franchise with a high success rate like World Options. I know many franchisees who had worked on other franchise opportunities but it didn’t work out for them until World Options. Finally be committed and prepared to put in the hard work and you will reap the rewards.

What are your plans for the future?

World Options have recently expanded globally with offices opened in the USA, so the long term plan after 2018/19 will be to move to Florida and work on the franchise there. It will be a dream come true for the whole family and a real lifestyle change. Financially my plans are for my son and son law to keep building the business, double our £250k gross profit in the next 2 years, by reaching £500k, its totally achievable.

Would you do it again?

Absolutely, in a heartbeat! I wish I’d have done it sooner in fact, things are going great and I am delighted with my decision.

At just 33 years old, Richard Ormerod is one of World Options’ successful franchisees, and a walking talking advert for their business model.

Richard‘s graduated with a degree in Law and a Masters in IT, but the sales industry is where his professional life led him. Before Richard became a franchisee he took a sales rep role with World Options selling their courier services.

When World Options began franchising, Richard could see the potential from ‘the inside’, and decided he wanted a piece of the action. He could see the income possibilities and of course the value of working for yourself, so he set-up his own World Options franchise business in December 2012 and hasn’t looked back since.
