...LighterLife franchisee Sarah Demaree
In my previous corporate life, I had a long commute to work and it got to the point where I realised that something had to change…
Since taking on a LighterLife franchise, my life has definitely changed for the better. I can get into the office in just seven minutes and, unlike in corporate life, I can set my own schedule and no two days are ever the same.
A typical Monday starts with the school run after which I head into the office to run a group from 9.30 – 11am. I then run Information Sessions and have a team meeting with my staff, before picking up my youngest daughter from school. I then play the role of mum’s taxi, taking her to various after-school activities before heading back to the office to run groups from 6 – 7.30pm.
Tuesdays are quite different and, after dropping my daughter at school, I go for a run, take a shower and check my emails and phone messages, making sure that everyone’s calls are answered. I then pick her up from school and make tea before heading into the office at 5.30. I run groups back to back and head home around 9.30pm for a light dinner and catch up with my older girls and husband.
I never work Friday or Saturday evenings or Sundays and although I am not home four evenings a week, I actually spend more time with my family. I have specifically scheduled my workload so that I never see clients between one and six as this is when lots of the kids’ activities take place.
I have purposely scheduled my days so I don’t get stuck in the same old routine which is easy as running your own business definitely means variety: anything from taking cash to the bank, shovelling snow, answering the phones, changing light bulbs and marketing my very own business!
The main challenge I have faced since becoming a LighterLife Counsellor is establishing boundaries. With any self employment you have to work hard, but with LighterLife you could work 24/7! As it takes a lot of courage for people to make initial contact, you want to keep everyone happy but, for your own wellbeing, you have to remember to keep within the framework of the business.
I definitely don’t work less than I did when I was in a corporate life but I do work smarter. Working for myself means that I have the flexibility of setting my own hours and I can do bookkeeping and other administration tasks from home. On the flip side, running a LighterLife franchise is more tiring as I care so much about what I’m doing now and I can’t resist putting 110% into it. But, as a result, it’s also 1000 times more satisfying!
Being a LighterLife Counsellor is a brilliant job. It has given me a good income and a really lovely quality of life that I really appreciate. Most importantly, it gives me a sense of actually making a difference.
